MYLEE

“Is this a joke?” I blurted, right in the middle of Amanda’s story about a guy she’d gone on an awful date with.

We were grabbing lunch before my doctor’s appointment since I was, as I often was, starving. This place had burritos the length of my arm, and I could devour two of them in an astonishingly short amount of time.

“What, the guy I’m talking about? Yeah—”

“No. Sorry to interrupt.” I picked up my phone, which I’d had sitting face up on the cafe table between us. “It’s just that Filip texted me.”

“Ugh, speaking of awful men.” Amanda’s eyes narrowed. “What did he have to say to you after all these months?”

“I don’t know.” I bit my lip, looking at the notification. “I’m so upset with him.”

“What if he wants to get back together?”

“Psh, no,” I said, even though a part of my heart desperately wanted that. I missed the old Filip. I had replayed the good parts of our relationship more times than I could count.

“Open the text!” Amanda said, nudging me with her foot.

I did, letting out a shaky breath. It was short and to the point. “He wants me to take a paternity test with his doctor.”

“What? Why now?” Amanda asked, leaning over to look at the text. “Why would he do that?”

“I don’t know.” I texted him back asking him why and put my phone face down. “I don’t want this drama in my life.”

“You don’t deserve it in your life either.” She spotted a server and flagged them down. “Can we get more chips, please? Thank you.”

“How did you know I wanted more chips?” I asked, taking the last few.

“Because you look hungry.” She scanned me, her eyes laced with concern—my less-than-plump cheeks and bony clavicles. I had been losing weight despite eating enough for three grown men. It would have been concerning at any point in my pregnancy, but this close to my due date, it was dire.

“I know.”

I rested my hand on my belly and smoothed my hand over it. I’d taken to wearing thicker clothes, both because I was so cold all the time and because I was afraid I was going to get those light flash kicks again. I hadn’t had one during the day in the weeks since I’d gotten the email from the private investigator, at least. But now they happened at night, which was a real treat. It was like a lightning storm inside of my room.

“I bet the doctor will know what’s up,” Amanda said, trying her best to smile. “He’s going over your bloodwork, right?”

“Yep.” The baby shifted inside me. “I hope he’ll know too.”

I polished off my food and walked to the doctor’s office one building over. The wait was brutal—even though I needed all the food I’d eaten, I still had bouts of dizziness and fatigue that made me regret my big meal.

“Mylee?” A nurse called out. “We’re ready for you.”

I followed the nurse, my heart pounding. It was going so hard that the nurse who took my vital signs checked it twice to see if she’d measured it correctly.
